For those of us in the Labor Movement, it can be a bit frustrating when the public sees Labor Day as just the final chance to take a long weekend trip before summer fades into fall. That’s why it’s up to us to keep the legacy alive and thriving through the work we do every day. Labor Day is not just about what workers fought so hard to attain in the past, it’s about what we’re doing right now to stay strong in this new, unique and shifting economy. I want to thank you for that work and invite you to celebrate it this Labor Day through a new online educational venture.
CTA and a coalition of labor unions through the Alliance for a Better California are very excited to tell you about a new app and Web platform for workers – we’re calling it The Laborhood!
The Laborhood is a place where we will be bringing union and non-union workers together to share stories and to learn about the challenges that workers face every day – and how we can make change for the better. We are inspired every day by what workers are able to accomplish through collective bargaining and having a voice on the job. We want all workers to be treated fairly and with all the rights that every worker is entitled to. The Laborhood is a way to communicate that change is possible!
This is a new effort for all of us. So please visit www.thelaborhood.org. All information is designed to be easy to share. There are quick labor fact tweets, fun labor quizzes to share, and blogs. There’s even a Laborhood app for your iPhone or Android! You can also find us on Facebook (www.facebook.com/thelaborhood) and on Twitter @thelaborhood.
You’ve probably already planned what you are doing for Labor Day, but if not, take a look at the calendar of events on www.thelaborhood.org. They are searchable by zip code.
So as you head out to the beach or fire up the grill, join me and workers across California in keeping the legacy of Labor Day alive.
I hope you have a wonderful Labor Day with family and friends.
In solidarity,
Dean E. Vogel
