MEET THE MEMBERS WHO ARE SHOWING UP ON THE BALLOT

When important decisions that impact California classrooms are made, California educators should be part of the discussion. That’s why more and more educators are showing up on the ballot in local elections. Want to meet some of them? Here’s an advanced peek of the California Educator where we hear from our educators/candidates, follow local chapters that are mobilized for a victory in November and take a closer look at the two candidates for Superintendent of Public Instruction.

If you know someone who hasn’t made up their mind about the SPI race:

October Educator of the week Marja Santos

Why are you an educator?

I am an educator because I have always wanted to help children that need extra support.  In high school I was an off campus TA and worked at an elementary school mentoring children with emotional needs.  This began my adventure into special education and my journey working with children with behavioral and emotional needs.

What do you enjoy most about your career?

I love that everyday is an adventure with my students, you never know what to expect.  I am so proud when they share their accomplishments with me, it is wonderful to watch them grow and realize how amazing they are.

What do you do in your spare/free time?

I love sharing my spare time with my husband and son.  We love being outdoors enjoying the fresh air especially while hiking or biking.  My favorite new past time is watching my son on his new adventure in BMX racing!

What does being a member of the Vacaville Teachers Association mean to you?

Being a member of VTA means always having the support of others who understand our field.

September Educator of the week Anwar Honore!

Why are you an educator?

I am an educator because when I was a child, I had difficulty reading because most of my elementary teachers didn’t make reading enjoyable or engaging.  So, I decided that when I have my own classroom I will make sure that I show my students that reading is not only essential to their whole academic career, it can be fun as well.

What do you enjoy most about your career?

What I enjoy most about my career is seeing that “Ah-Ha!” moment my students have using all the math strategies that I taught them this year.  I enjoy showing my students that anyone with drive and determination can master any math skill.

What do you do in your spare/free time?

In my spare time I enjoy spending time with my wife and almost 2 year old son, watching football games GO EAGLES!, and reading.

What does being a member of the Vacaville Teachers Association mean to you?

For me, being a member of the VTA means that I am a part of a group that has my best interests and celebrates teachers in a very unique and special way.
