May 2017 Educator of the Month Jackie Carmona

Why are you a teacher?

Honestly, I’ve always enjoyed math and helping/tutoring/teaching others math. Every time I thought I wanted to change my major, I started interning or tutoring and always came back to the idea of being a teacher. I love teaching math and helping my students build confidence that they can also “math”.

What do you enjoy most about teaching?

My favorite part about teaching is the relationships that you get to build with your students. Teaching is way more than just learning the content, but sharing your life experiences and encouraging your students to be a better person and make good choices every day. Oh, and the laughing. I love laughing with my students.

Years teaching?

This will be the end of my 4th year. All of the students that I had when they were freshman are now graduating. It’s a bittersweet year.

What do you do in your spare/free time?

I love everything to do with plants, crafting, and nature. So my best days are spent outdoors decorating a new pot for new plant or hiking in nature. I also love my cuddling with dogs – they’re the best!

Fun fact – about you.

I’m the first in my family to be born in the U.S.A. I am also the first to have graduated from college.

What does being a member of the Vacaville Teachers Association mean to you?

Being a member of VTA means that I am part of organization of caring and resourceful teachers that enjoy getting together to have a good time.

California Casualty and CTA Team Up for CA Educators and Schools

Since 1951, California Teachers Association and California Casualty have supported and protected educators in the Golden State in partnership. That’s why it is no surprise that both organizations are proud sponsors of the 2017 California School Recognition Program, acknowledging those who are making strides to educate our children, create great learning centers, and adapt to new challenges and standards.
We join the California Department of Education in recognizing the five extraordinary California Teachers of the Year (celebrated in February) and the 275 middle and high schools named 2017 Gold Ribbon Schools.
California Casualty CEO Beau Brown added how impressed he was by the educators who help students reach their full potential. “We are all inspired by the extraordinary commitment it takes to be a Gold Ribbon School,” he said. “Just as you commit so much to make a difference for future generations, we are proud to support you with the highest level of care, service, compassion and understanding.”
Superintendent Tom Torlakson said, “These awards highlight excellence across the state, provide a forum for sharing best practices and recognize educators who contribute to the highest quality of education for California’s students.”
The alliance of the California Department of Education, CTA and California Casualty is a testament to how education advocates, businesses and organizations can come together to promote the remarkable successes of our schools and educators.
